Advanced Shipment Notice Vs Distribution Shipment Notice
Whenever i used to read about ASN/ DSN (Advanced Shipment Notice/ Distribution Shipment Notice) in my college days, i used to get confused. ASN helps the lead organization to decrease the cost of the movement of goods. It plays a very important role in supply chain management.
Advanced Shipment Notice is an advance notification sent by the vendor before the actual physical shipment of goods. This notice is sent via EDI (electronic data interchange), EDIFACT to the lead organization. The vendors send this information to the distribution center of the lead organization this information reaches to the distribution centers/ warehouse way before the physical reception of goods. This notice includes the information related to purchase orders, probable arrival date, items, their quantities, and label related information. This information is used by the distribution center planners to plan the warehouse related activities such as receiving, cross-docking, put away, labor management etc. The amount of work in coming days help the DC managers to plan in advance and manage to allocate labor in receiving/ cross docking or put away. This also help the lead organization to track the difference in ordered quantities and received quantities leading to less inventory shrinkage.
On the other hand, Distribution Shipment Notice is the notification sent by the Distribution centers/ warehouses to the stores. Both of these stores and warehouses may belong to the same organization or different organization. This is also called as shipment. After loading the labels/ products on the trailer, the distribution notice number is generated and it is unique for each store on each delivery/ shipment. Each trailer may have multiple shipments going to multiple stores.
Lead Organization - An organization which markets the products or sells the products to the end customer. This may be a manufacturer which also sells the products or an organization which procures the product and then sells it with a marginal profit.
